Support Bill 118
Send an online Message to Minister Brenda Elliot

For many disabled people, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) is
their only source of income. People relying on ODSP have not had an increase in their benefits since the Conservatives became government.

Since 1995 the cost-of-living has increased more than 9.5%, yet the maximum monthly ODSP allowance available for a single disabled person is $930. This does not come close to meeting basic monthly needs.

NDP Poverty Critic Tony Martin has introduced Bill 118, the Ontario Disability Support Program Amendment Act (Fairness in Disability Income Support Payments), 2001, that would ensure that ODSP payments rise as the cost of living rises. With the passage of this Bill, people reliant on ODSP would receive an annual cost of living adjustment every April 1st to stop them from slipping further into poverty.

Here is a web link that takes a minute to send an email directly to Minister Elliott that demands she and her government support the second reading of Bill 118, NDP Poverty Critic Tony Martin's bill to raise Ontario Disability Support (ODSP) benefits.

Please forward to others in your network. The more pressure that's applied, the more chance we have at getting Bill 118 passed for third reading.

Thank You!

Support the Second Reading of Bill 118!

NDP Poverty Critic Tony Martin's Bill 118 to increase ODSP benefits will be called for second reading on Thursday June 13th at 11 am - at that time (12 noon) there will be an hour of debate followed by the vote to decide whether or not it proceeds to third reading.

We would love to fill the member's and visitor's galleries with people who support the NDP's bill - if you are planning on attending please give call Sarah Johnson at Tony Martin's Toronto office Tel: 416-325-4014 or email Sarah at sjordison@ndp.on.ca

Alternatively, you can call Howard Hampton's office to request passes to the Visitors' Gallery. Tel: 416-325-8300; Fax: 416-325-8222; e-mail: HowardHampton-MPP@ontla.ola.org

It is critical that pressure be put on the government to support Bill 118 before June 13th. Please phone, email and fax Tory MPPs demanding they support Bill 118. Tell everyone you know to write or phone their Tory MPPs

A full listing of Ontario MPPs with contact information is available
on the Government of Ontario website at www.ontla.on.ca/Members/mailing_addresses/index.htm

We want to make sure that this bill becomes law. For that to happen it must first pass 2nd reading. Any help you can provide to pressure the government will go a long way toward making this a reality.
