Hello Women!

On December 15th, in North Bay, Women with disAbilities got together to hand out flyers in front of 4 locations that carry President's Choice products and genetically engineered foods.

I was so encouraged that we had women who are blind, women who are deaf/hard-of-hearing, a woman with HIV, a woman with Hepatitis C, a woman with a brain injury, a women with a psychiatric disorder, a woman with an intellectual disability, a woman with MS, a woman with MD, a woman with severe chemical sensitivities participate... particularly so close to the holiday season when we are all so busy.

Locally, we, women with a diversity of disabilities, found a common issue which we could come together to try and make a difference. Thought it would be appropriate to share this information beyond our local community...

You may be surprised to learn that many people from our community were not aware that Presidents Choice products uses genetically engineered (GE) ingredients that are not listed on the ingredient information label. Among the most popular GE products that carry the Presidents Choice label are GE soy, corn, and canola-based products.

Genetic engineering involves the crossing of one species into another to get a plant with new traits. Example: some of the corn used by Loblaws/Superstore has been crossed with a bacterium to make the corn plant resistant to certain herbicides.

Loblaws / Superstore continue to claim that GE Foods are safe despite the fact that NO TESTING has been performed to ensure that there are no long term impacts on health. Scientists remain unsure if the practice of inserting new genes into foods can create new toxins and allergens that are hazardous to human health.

So What Does Loblaws / Superstore Not Want YOU To Know?

  • GE Foods have been on their shelf for several years now

  • 7 out of 10 processed food products in your shopping cart contain GE ingredients and they are taking great pains to HIDE this from customers

  • Loblaws / Superstore campaigned against Bill C-287 which called for the mandatory labelling of GE Foods.

  • Loblaws / Superstore even BANNED products carrying GE Labelling information from their stores.

What Can YOU Do?

  • Send a message to Loblaws / Superstore by avoiding Presidents Choice products in the new year.
  • Send a letter to Galen Weston, Chairman and President of Loblaws / Superstore and DEMAND that he phase out GE Foods from his store shelves.

For your info, Loblaws / Superstore is the largest grocery chain in Canada. They also own:
