KECK, Jennifer Dr.
In memory of Dr. Jennifer Keck, age 48, who passed away on Wednesday morning, June 12, 2002. Writer, academic and activist, Jennifers joie de vivre and passion for social justice were matched by her deep love for her family, and loyalty to her friends.Determined not to let her illness take control of her life, to the end Jennifer was an active organizer for anti-poverty initiatives and for breast cancer survivors. She also continued to be an active researcher in womens issues, labour and health care.
Born and raised in Sudbury, Dr. Keck was a professor in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University. Jennifer was a gifted teacher who mentored hundreds of social workers in the practice of community-based social work. She taught from experience and by example.
She was the president of Myths and Mirrors - Community and Political Arts; a founding member of the Sudbury Womens Centre/Centre des Femmes de Sudbury; a former board member of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women; a member of the advisory committee for Better Beginnings, Better Futures; an executive member of the Circle of Strength - The Sudbury Breast Cancer Support Group.
Jennifer was the driving force behind Justice with Dignity - The Committee to Remember Kimberly Rogers and key researcher in several studies, including projects with the USWA Womens Committee and the Call Centers.
Dr. Keck had enthusiasm and persistence in equal measure and brought these qualities to all aspects of her daily life.
Jennifer is survived by her loving partner Don Kuyek, her beloved son David, and her special son Devlin; her devoted father Lyle Keck (predeceased by her mother Jacqueline Fournier Keck), her treasured sister Leslie Keck and her special daughter Jordan Keck.
She will be sadly missed by her family and by many friends, colleagues and students, all of whom benefited from her great generosity of spirit. The Spirit of Jennifer/Lesprit de Jennifer lives on in every life she touched.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jennifer Keck will be held at Alphonse Raymond Auditorium (School of Education, Laurentian University) on Saturday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Dr. Jennifer Keck Lecture Series on Social Justice, Laurentian University.
