A Toronto judge will be asked to make a ruling Thursday about a motion
which could result in a coroners inquest into the death of a pregnant
woman under house arrest for welfare fraud expanding dramatically in scope.
A coalition of public interest groups, including the national Elizabeth
Fry Society, Womens Legal Education Fund and National Association
of Women and the Law, are challenging a coroners ruling into the
death of Kimberly Rogers.
Lawyers presented a motion Tuesday and evidence will and legal submissions
on the matter will be presented Thursday.
In a recent ruling, presiding coroner Dr. David Eden ruled systemic discrimination
against women will not be allowed as an issue to be explored in the death
of Rogers.
