Remembering Kimberly Rogers

August 9, 2002

Today, August 9, 2002, marks one year since Kimberly Rogers, eight months pregnant, died alone in her apartment. As I placed two vases of flowers on the round table beneath her portrait this morning, I was moved, as always, by her facial expression of love and peace. I drew up a chair to face her and felt her aura emanate. The gold leaf shimmered on her mantle, angelic-like. I said a silent prayer for her and talked to her about her sacrifice and symbolism, the way we talked when I was painting her portrait. She liked the second vase of delicate colored flowers from the garden for this special remembrance, as well as the gold candle, standing strong. Lastly, the fountain of healing malachite trickled gently, reminding us that the soul lives on.

About the portrait:

There are otherimages within the painting that were not intentionally painted. Many people see the profile of Christ on the right side of the picture. Top of the head at the level of her eyes and the bottom at the base of her neck. Long flowing hair. In the lower half of the painting where she is holding “Angel With Child”, a small baby’s hand can be see on either side. In the digital image of the painting her dates appear as 1561-2001, not 1961. I looked up famous women who had lived in 1561 and found the following: Elizabeth I of England was kept under house arrest in the Tower of London, Mary Queen of Scots was held under house arrest by Elizabeth I and St Avila was a reformer and the strongest of women. Kim was a strong woman and reformer….and held under house arrest.
