Who is ARCC-CDAC?

The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada / Coalition pour le Droit à l’Avortement au Canada (ARCC-CDAC) is the only nation-wide political pro-choice group devoted to ensuring abortion rights and access for women. ARCC-CDAC formed in October 2005 because:

  • Much remains to be done to improve access to abortion in Canada.

  • National coordination is needed to tackle the many problems we still face.

  • In the current Parliament, at least 63% of Conservative MP’s and 21% of Liberal MPs are publicly anti-choice.

  • The anti-choice movement in Canada is still strong and active.

What have we done so far?

  • We were active during the January 2006 federal election highlighting abortion issues and the anti-abortion agenda of many MP’s in the Conservative Party (visit this link)

  • We’ve established a strong voice and presence in New Brunswick, where our fight continues to force the NB Government to obey the law and fund the Morgentaler clinic in Fredericton.

  • We’ve produced and published many position papers on our website, which serve as a valuable resource to our members, media, and government.

  • We’ve increased our public profile: Our national spokespersons are frequently called by the media, and we’ve been networking with other women’s groups across the country.

  • We’ve made solid links to other major pro-choice groups in Canada, so we can work together productively with a unified message.

  • We published the premiere issue of our newsletter in March 2007.

  • In addition to our website: www.arcc-cdac.ca, we created three online listservs for members to share news and views on reproductive rights, get support, and participate in our initiatives.

  • We created a Strategic Communications Plan to help guide our future activities and priorities and increase our public profile.

  • We’re incorporating federally as a non-profit group (not a charity), and have appointed a Board of Directors.

What are our future plans?

  • We’ll be active in the next federal election campaign educating voters and the media on the danger to abortion rights, especially if the Conservatives win another election, and on the Conservative government’s abysmal record on women’s rights.

  • We’ll continue our fight in New Brunswick to get the Fredericton clinic funded. We want to work towards repeal of that province’s unconstitutional and discriminatory regulation that requires the approval of two doctors before a woman can get a funded abortion at a hospital.

  • We plan to start a cross-Canada network of student pro-choice groups on university campuses.

  • We want to publish our newsletter on a quarterly basis.

  • We’re currently revamping our website to make it more interactive and up-to-date, so our supporters can stay informed and take action on initiatives and campaigns.

  • We want to improve our level of bilingualism. Many of our materials await translation into French.

  • We want to significantly increase our members, donors, and volunteers through outreach and fundraising initiatives.

As you can see, we have big plans for the coming year! We hope very much that you’ll join us, and give us your financial support so we can make it all happen.
