Information Services

Caregiver Information Support Line (CISL):

Each month, over 250 calls are received on the OBIA toll-free Caregiver Information Support Line (CISL) at: 1-800-263-5404

These calls include requests for information about brain injury,as well as inquiries regarding
brain injury services.

BIAN responds to 50 calls monthly, averaging 600 calls annually.

OBIA & BIAN provide the following services through this line:

  • Computerized access to a list of more than 5,000 articles about brain injury;

  • A catalogue of the over 150 available books, articles and video tapes about various brain injury related issues;

  • Access to prevention projects to reduce the incidence of brain injury;

  • Participation in research-related activities;

  • Access to programs designed to raise awareness to the needs of persons with brain injury;

  • Linkage to brain injury rehabilitation and support services;

  • Assistance in securing these services;

  • Documentation of the need for rehabilitation services throughout Ontario.

CISL is also used to develop an extensive and ongoing CONFIDENTIAL database of information about individuals with acquired brain injury and their caregivers. A five-page questionnaire has been designed to collect demographic data as well as information about assessments of activity limitations, community integration, service use and need, and caregiver stress levels.

The database developed from this information provides useful statistics. For example, CISL can estimate the number and ratio of individuals with severe, moderate or mild levels of impairment, the unemployment rate among individuals with acquired brain injury and the proportion of these individuals who use or need various services.

Annual follow-up is crucial to determine factors associated with the improved or diminished life style of individuals who are affected by injury to the brain.
