About the BIAN Discussion List

The Brain Injury Association Network:
BIAN includes an online community of persons affected by brain injury as well as a website at http://dawn.thot.net/brain

The BIAN Discussion List is comprised of persons with living with a brain injury, their family members, caregivers, and service professionals interested in issues relevant to brain inury.

The List is used as a mechanism for participants to communicate, share, and disseminate information in a supportive environment.

Both the website and the discussion list are maintained by Barbara Anello, as a volunteer and are operated without funding or sponsorship.

What may I post to the list?

Topics that are relevant to the BIAN discussion list and pertain to issues of concern to persons affected directly or indirectly by brain injury.

This is fairly broad in scope to allow for an open arena for persons with brain injuries, family members, caregivers, service professionals, brain injury advocates and activists, students and educators, to come together, communicate, share, and disseminate information in a supportive environment.

There are some materials that are discouraged for posting to the BIAN discussion list. These include:

  • material that does not directly pertain to brain injury or disabilities;
  • job opening messages;
  • jokes of any kind;
  • messages about computer viruses.
  • petitions

Messages will be NOT be reviewed prior to posting to the list so please ensure that they follow the parameters of the BIAN discussion list.

What is the preferred format for posting messages to the list?

Please keep your message to a maximum of 3 - 5 screens of text (about 250 lines of text).

It is helpful to all participants if your name and email address is included at the bottom of your message. That way, people can reply directly to you if desired. Please do not use a signature file that is longer than five lines and should not be included as an attachment

Please make sure that you indicate the discussion topic in the header to your email message. It helps everyone keep track of the original thread of conversation.

Avoid copying the entire original message to which you are responding. Copying and pasting the section which is directly relevant is more courteous. Some participants pay by message or pay by bandwidth and having unnecessary text makes the posts quite long.

Please do not attempt to send your information through an attached file. Many people have trouble dealing with attached files and we can not forward messages with attachments to the discussion group. It's much easier to have participants copy and paste the relevant material right into the body of the message.

To upload a file that will be available to participants, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bian
-- follow the link from the left navigation menu called FILES -- from here, you may upload a file(s).

What is the difference between individual vs. digest format?

Your messages from BIAN discussion list will be individual when you first subscribe to the discussion group. Each message posted by a BIAN discussion list participant will be sent to you as a single e-mail.

If you would like to receive all of the messages in one e-mail at the end of the day, change your subscription to digest format.

How to do this: Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bian
-- follow the link from the right hand side of the page below Membership entitled Delivery Options... and change your settings from individual emails to daily digest.

How may I stop receiving messages temporarily?

You may at some point wish to put a hold on your account temporarily from receiving BIAN discussion list messages (example: You are going on vacation and don't want to receive messages but do not want to unsubscribe from the list).

To change your delivery options, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bian -- follow the link from the right hand side of the page below Membership entitled Delivery Options... and change your settings to no email.

When you are ready to receive emails again, follow the above step again, and choose the daily email or the digest mode.
