Question: I use Netscape Navigator on a regular basis and it's infuriating
to click on URL in a document only to have Internet Explorer open up.
How can I change my system so that Netscape instead of Internet Explorer
opens up?
Answer:
This happens because Internet Explorer (IE) is Windows' default browser.
Surprised? Me neither. What you need to do is change the default browser
settings so your favoured browser opens instead of IE.
Here's how to change your browser default settings:
Select <Start>
Select <Settings>
option and a side menu will open
In the side
menu, select <Control Panel> option
In the Control
Panel, select the <Internet Options> icon (For sighted users,
it's a little picture of a computer monitor in front of the earth.)
When the Internet
Properties Window opens, choose the tab marked <Programs>. You'll
have a choice from a list of Internet options - mail, HTML editors,
etc. - that contain pull-down menus, which allow you to select specific
programs to do specific tasks. Not one of these pull-down menus mentions
anything about your default browser. But down at the bottom of the
screen is a box with a checkmark in it and beside that box reads,
"Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default
browser".
Select this
box to remove the checkmark, then select <Apply> to keep your
changes.
Finally, select
<OK> to exit the window.
Now, when you open
your preferred browser, a prompt window should appear asking you if
you want to make it the default browser.
Select <Yes>
and your browser default setting is changed.
