Backdoor.Berbew - New Windows Virus
A new virus variously called "Webber," "BackDoor" and "Backdoor.Berbew" has been detected by security experts. This virus appears to be an email notifying you that a bank has rejected your credit application. You might wonder who applied for a loan in your name and be tempted to investigate. Beware. This is a "Trojan" type virus. If you click on the attached file, unwanted software is installed on your computer. From Symantec: "The Backdoor Trojan steals passwords and delivers them in the form of URL requests to the Web site of the Trojan's creator" This particular virus installs software that can be used to direct junk email to people -- effectively making you part of a big spamming network. Be cautious of file attachments you receive by email, even if they appear to be from trusted friends or family members ... The exception to this, of course, is if you're expecting someone to send you a file by email or if the sender includes enough details, to your satisfaction, in the body of the email clarifying what is attached. (e.g. Attached as a WORD doc are the Minutes from our July 15, 2003 board call; Attached is an image file of the Pay the Rent poster as a .jpg file; Attached in PDF format, is the H.O.M.E. brochure, Symantec has posted information about this (so-far) low-risk threat at this pinpoint URL: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/backdoor.berbew.html Whatever anti-virus software you use, now would be a good time to update your virus definitions (i.e. the information your anti-virus software uses to detect and remove known threats).
