Surfing the Web: Bookmarks and Favorites With millions of websites and more coming online daily, you will undoubtedly find ones you want to revisit. Bookmarks and Favorites save the addresses of sites so you can return to them quickly, without having to retype the addresses. Whether you are using Navigator or Internet Explorer, the procedure is similar. To save a web page,
go to the Bookmarks or Favorites menu or click on its icon and select
Add. When you click on the icon again, the title of the page you recorded
will appear at the bottom of the list. To access the page, just double-click
on the title. Putting Your Links in Order Soon you will discover that you've got dozens of bookmarks. It's now time to organize them into folders. If you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or later releases, click on the Favorites button on the toolbar to open the Favorites window. Now select Organize Favorites. Click on the folder icon to create a new folder, then name it. We suggest organizing your bookmarks in folders by subjects, for example: as Food, Travel, News, Sports, etc. Now click on each Favorite once, hold down your left mouse button and drag the Favorite into the appropriate subject folder. If you use Navigator 4.0 or a later release, click on the Bookmarks icon to view all your bookmarks. Under the File menu, select New Folder. In the Name box, type in a name for the folder, then click on OK. Now return to your list of bookmarks, click once on one to highlight it, then drag it into the appropriate subject folder. Repeat the process for the other topics and bookmarks. Sometimes the names of the bookmarks aren't descriptive, so you may want to alter them. With Navigator, select the bookmark you want to change by clicking on it once. Go to the Edit menu and choose Bookmark Properties. Now type in the new name and click OK. With Explorer, open the Favorites window, then click on Organize Favorites. After the dialog box opens, click on the Favorite you want to change. Next, click the Rename button and type a new name.
Exporting Favorites / Bookmarks - I.E. & Netscape
Backing up Internet Explorer's <Favorites> is a little more complicated than backing up Netscape Navigator's <Bookmarks>. I'll cover both here. For Internet Explorer, single-click the <File> menu with the left mouse button. Then single-click on the <Import and Export> option. The <Import / Export Window> opens. Single-click on the <Next> button. You'll be asked to select an action to perform. In the box provided, single-click on <Export Favorites>. Now single-click on <Next>. The Wizard will ask you which file you want to export. This is handy if you only want to export one folder from your list of <Favorites>. The Wizard presumes you probably want to export all your bookmarks, so defaults to <Favorites>. If you want to export a specific folder from <Favorites>, single-click on that folder to select it. Then single-click on <Next>. Now the Wizard wants to know where you want the <Favorites> exported to. Single-click in the button marked <Export to a File or Address>, and then single-click the <Browse> button. The <Select Bookmark File> opens. Save your <Favorites> to a location where you can find them easily (I favor saving them to a floppy disc or the <Desktop> myself). Single-click on <Save>. Back at the Wizard, single-click on <Next>. You're almost done! Single-click on <Finish>, and the Wizard will copy your Favorites and send them to the location you specified. You'll get a little window informing you that the export worked. Now you have a file with all of your <Favorites> that you can email to others or save on disc. That's it for Internet Explorer. Netscape Navigator does things differently. Open Navigator and single-click on the <Communicator> menu. Hover the mouse pointer over the <Bookmarks> option. When the side menu opens, single-click on <Edit Bookmarks>. A new window will open listing all your bookmarks. Single-click on the <File> menu, and then single-click on <Save As>. When the <Save bookmarks file> window opens, choose where you want to save the file, and single-click on <Save>. Your bookmark list will be copied and saved as a separate file. Back it up onto a floppy, and you've got your bookmarks saved in a safe place.
Importing Favorites / Bookmarks - I.E. & Netscape
Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer import bookmarks in different ways. For Internet Explorer, single-click on the <File> menu with the left-mouse button and then single-click on <Import and Export Favorites>. The <Import / Export Wizard> opens. The first thing you'll do is single-click on the <Next> button to get things started. The Wizard will now ask you what you want to do. In the list of options provided, single-click on <Import Favorites>, and then single-click on <Next>. On the next page that appears, single-click in the button marked <Import from a File or Address>, and then click on the <Browse> button. The <Select Bookmark File> will open. Locate the bookmark file you want to import, and single-click on it to highlight it. Then single-click on <Save>, and single-click on <Next> to continue. Now the Wizard will ask you what folder you want to import the files to in the Favorites list. Leave things the way they are and single-click on <Next>. The imported files will appear in a folder labeled <Imported Bookmarks>. The Wizard will let you know when the files are successfully imported. Close the Wizard and you're done! To import bookmarks back into Netscape Navigator, open Navigator and single-click on the <Communicator> menu. Hover the mouse pointer over <Bookmarks>, and then single-click <Edit Bookmarks> in the side menu. When the <Bookmarks> window opens, single-click on the <File> menu, and then single-click again on <Open Bookmarks File>. The <Open Bookmarks
File> window opens. Locate the file you want to import, single-click
it to highlight it, and then single-click on
