DAWN Ontario: DisAbled Women's Network Ontario

*... look out normal, here comes trouble ... we did it once and now we're gonna do it again...*

FILTH, FUN AND FURY is what you will find, (well) written around themes of disability and queer pride in our first co-operatively produced zine: dis'n'tangle. dis'n'tangle is here to ROCK some assumptions, especially those nasty little rumours about people with DISABILITIES not being SEXUAL which would seem to make being queer pretty much unthinkable. well, now we know that is not so, shall we move on? this zine is about accessibility and breaking down barriers. people with disabilities who are QUEER want to be recognized for our contributions to society. yet, the attitudinal and physical barriers in the lgbtq communities and the community at large, leave many of us marginalized and isolated. so many of us have been socialized with a lot of shame, and have lived with the demands and compromises of normalcy: fit in or else... this makes PRIDE so very important and so very tricky. dis'n'tangle is a SASSY piece of work for and by people with disabilities and allies seeking inclusion and reflection on all fronts.
There are still copies of volume one 'shaking the foundations of normalcy' available, but read on to find out more about how you can contribute to the next issue.

Tell us what's close to your heart! We know we're out there, now what do we want...send us your comments, rants, reviews, comics, drawings, poems, quotes, collages, ideas, stories, manifestos, resource lists, fiction, strange but true stories and lies...

Some of the things we are hoping to cover might include, but are by no means limited to: sex and dating stories, body image and identity, comments on popular culture representations and the ones we are working on or would like to bring about, declarations of sexual liberation and oppression, disability culture and expanding definitions of activist strategies, confronting horizontal oppression, how we support each other, sex/queer/disability positive resources, references, making connexions and communication, personal reflections.

Reproduction details etc.
We are a random force of ideas coming together, and we hope that the zine will reflect the diversity that exists among us. This is direct action self-publishing, and we like working with multiple meanings and formats, so be crafty, and please let us know if you have suggestions that would make the work more accessible. If you have the creative juices flowing and wanna paste/layout yer own work, be our guest or send us your text and we can lay it out.

We'll be reproducing copies onto 4" by 7". (half of 8.5" X 14"), but please allow for an inch around the edges of your piece to avoid words getting cut off and later photocopying stress

All submissions must be reproducible in black and white. Originals will not be returned unless requested if you want your work returned please include a self-addressed envelope with submission.

Also let us know how you want your work credited and if you want to, add anything about wonderful You. If you want to put a little circle with a "c" to let people know not to reproduce without permission tell us (unless of course you wish to endorse this option, such as: all material herein suitable for shouting from street corners, painting on concrete, and sky writing) or if you don't want your whole name or want to use a pseudo or an alter let us know that too.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2002. Please include an email address or other contact information so we can let you know promptly if your piece will be included in this issue.

We're also looking for interested people to collaborate and collectivate, some possible things would be spreading the word, collecting submissions, work on layout, alternative formatting, folding, stapling and distributing the finished zines (in the fall), and more...

QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, ORDERS and for SUBMISSIONS to dis'n'tangle 2, please contact us c/o dispride_zine@hotmail.com or write to: 50 cowan ave. toronto, ontario, canada. m6k 2n4.
