DEMONSTRATION!
Tuesday June 29th 2004,
11:00 am
Montreal Palais de Justice, St-Antoine entrance
Tammy
Shaikh grew up in Place Benoit. She was killed by her estranged
husband and has left behind 4 children.
The protest's
mandate is to discourage the settlement of a plea bargain for
the lesser sentence of manslaughter in light of the heinous
and violent nature of this crime.
The law
must do justice for Tammy and her family in this case, and must
prevent Thomas Kane, and others like him, from causing the brutality
and sorrow this tragedy has brought about.

Prevention
& Consequence Will Stop the Violence Against
Women
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 16, 2004
Demonstrations
for the Tommy Kane murder case
Tuesday, June 22, 2004 & Tuesday, June 29, 2004
Montreal Palais de Justice, St-Antoine Street entrance
Time: 11:30 AM
On November 30, 2003, Tammara Shaikh was lured into going to
the home of her estranged husband Thomas Kane in Lasalle, with the
intention of helping him go to a detoxification center. She was brutally
beaten and ended up dead. As the next of kin, I was informed by the
coroners report dated March 8, 2004, that the actual cause of
death was not from the brutal beating she incurred, as was first thought,
but actually from having her throat slashed by a sharp object.
Thomas Kane is
an ex- NFL football player for the Seattle Seahawks and Syracuse University
who grew up in Montréals Little Burgundy. He killed my
sister in the prime of her life at the age of 35 leaving behind 4
children ages 4, 5, 6 and 10. I am Tammys sister and best friend.
My sister was killed after having been threatened repeatedly over
the last few months of her life for wanting to end the marriage. I
am convinced that my sister Tammy was a victim of premeditated murder.
There will be
a final decision following the preliminary inquiry, which took place
on May 25, 26, and 27, 2004. The hearing will be concluded on June
29, 2004. I fear that the defense attorney representing Thomas Kane,
will attempt to convince the crown attorney to accept a plea bargain
for a lesser sentence of manslaughter.
That being said,
two demonstrations will be held in protest, the first on June 22,
2004. The second demonstration will be held immediately preceding
the conclusion of the Preliminary hearing on June 29, 2004. Both demonstrations
will commence at 11:30 am. on the steps of the Montreal Palais de
Justice - St-Antoine Street entrance.
The Shaikh family,
loved ones, Women Aware, The Old Brewery Mission/Camp Chapleau, Tyndale
St-Georges Community Center and other supporters will gather to protest
the possibility of any plea bargain for a lesser sentence in light
of the heinous and violent nature of this crime.
Participation
and support of any kind are greatly needed to make a strong statement
that such crimes must be punishable to the full extent of the law.
The law must do justice for Tammy and her family in this case, and
must deter others like Kane from brutally attacking women. We must
demonstrate that only serious consequence will reduce such abhorrent
violence which causes intense pain and sorrow to victims, their families
and loved ones. We must demonstrate that only prevention and serious
consequence will stop the violence. Tammys children got a life
sentence, how about Tommy?
Ava Shaikh will
be available for interview through the above mentioned contacts.
The coroners report will be available to the press upon request.
