Women
made a difference!
National
Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC)
For Immediate Release
June
30, 2004
The National
Action Committee on the Status of Women congratulates the
pan-Canadian womens movement for its active role in the federal
election. Even though the mainstream media did not adequately report
on womens issues and did not acknowledge the very active pursuit
of equality issues by womens groups, women found alternative
ways to communicate about the issues and inform themselves of the
party positions.
Women must now
organize to ensure that the rights guaranteed in the Charter are not
weakened and that funding is restored to social programs. The Liberal
government must reconsider its policies and move to restore funding
to NGOs on a core-funding basis.
Divisive and discriminatory
attitudes must be countered by active support to equality-seeking
groups. Canadians have clearly demonstrated they do not want to integrate
with the current U.S. model of government or standards.
NAC calls upon
the new Canadian government to keep the Canadian in Canada and stay
the course in promoting equality through redistribution policies,
a progressive tax system, a national child care program, a program
that fights crimes against women and a new system of proportional
representation.
Women can make
a difference and we have.
