Women, the Family and the State - 14th Biennial Conference
National Association of Women and the Law

Preliminary Programme

Globalization and the new world order are redefining the role of the state, forcing governments to downsize, reduce or eliminate public services, and privatize a range of activities. These policies will have extremely negative consequences for women, in all regions of Canada and around the world, especially if they belong to historically disadvantaged communities, by forcing women back into the private family sphere, where they are unequal, unprotected and subject to arbitrary abuse and power.

Dining with the Tories! Take Back a Piece of Ontario!
Friday, March 22nd 6:30 PM
meet at MOSS PARK (QUEEN & SHERBOURNE)
RALLY & SNAKE MARCH
The Tories will be settling in for some fine dining while the province goes hungry. Guess who will be joining them? We are not going to let them eat without at least giving them a little indigestion. Taking a cue from our Argentinean sisters and brothers we ask that everyone bring their pots and pans as we take to the streets and make some noise. As we do this, a little bird told us that some concerned Ontario citizens may be taking a piece of Ontario back and may be converting it into some temporary housing. If this is true we will drag ourselves away from the Tories and end the march at this new housing to congratulate the folks there on their civic mindedness and reflect on how they accomplished something the Tories refuse to do. Perhaps some of us will want to spend some time that night with them at their new digs.

Take Back Ontario 2002 Rally & March

Saturday, March 23rd 12:00 PM
meet at ALLAN GARDENS (CARLTON & SHERBOURNE)
RALLY & SNAKE MARCH
The Tory leadership convention will be in full swing and so will we! It's not going to be business as usual for these politicians and their corporate backers. They plan to elect a new leader. We plan to hold a mass, diverse, militant, and disciplined demonstration that converges on the convention. For this day to be a success we need your creativity and skills so start planning with your group, friends, co-workers, organization ASAP so we can show the new Tory leader that the people of Ontario are still able to fight back and this time they plan to fight to win!

Plan to Join the OPSEU Solidarity Pickets on April 2, 2002
45,000 members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) have been out on strike since March 13, 2002. They need our support now more than ever. After 7 years of harmful, sometimes deadly policies by the Tory government, it's time to rebuild our public services.

Remember Walkerton, Dudley George, Ontario public services devastated, the poor abandoned, health care chaos, schools starved of cash ... the list goes on.

Enough is Enough!
Labour councils throughout Ontario are working with OPSEU to determine time and location of solidarity pickets for Tuesday, April 2. Plan to join the line! Details of picket locations will be listed on OFL web site at www.ofl-fto.on.ca. The longer the line, the shorter the strike!

First International Seminar on Women's Safety
From the 1970s to the World March of Women in the year 2000, groups of women on all five continents have worked to highlight the phenomenon of violence against women - violence in their personal lives as well as in public spaces.

Violence against women and girls and the various manifestations of inequality have a direct impact on how safe women feel. And feeling unsafe becomes in turn a fundamental obstacle to achieving gender equality. It curtails women's mobility and limits their capacity to participate fully and freely as citizens.

Safe cities for women = safe cities for everybody!

Cities play an increasingly important role today, and this means that issues related to women's participation and urban development that takes account of gender inequalities are crucial for all partners concerned: groups of women, municipalities, researchers, governments and international development agencies. The concept of "inclusive cities" cannot become a reality unless women in all their diversity are fully involved in and benefit equally from community development.

Monday, July 29, 2002 from 12 - 6 PM
Front Yard of the Pope Squat

On July 25, 2002, OCAP will open the Pope Squat. In the middle of Toronto's housing crisis, as the City spends millions of dollars funding the Pope's visit, squatters will demand the construction of more social housing as they occupy an abandoned building in a Toronto neighborhood. The Pope Squat will ultimately be transformed into self-managed social housing and a vibrant community center.

Toronto activists are inviting you to celebrate the opening of the Pope Squat by coming to a Radical Garage Sale on the Squat's proverbial front lawn on Monday, July 29, 2002. Although garage sales are normally held by residents of a building when they move OUT, this community garage sale is being organized in support of the occupants who will just have moved IN!

So clear all the unused stuff out of your stifling apartments. Bring it down to the Pope Squat on Monday afternoon and sell or barter it for someone else's unused stuff. Sales contributions of Radical Kitsch are especially encouraged.

Proceeds from your sales are yours to do with what you wish, though donations to OCAP and the Pope Squat are very welcome.

The location of the Pope Squat will be announced when it is opened on July 25th. Check your email or the OCAP website for updates: www.ocap.ca. For more information about the Radical Garage Sale, please get in touch with Anna at awillats@sympatico.ca or John at john@tao.ca.

Using the Internet for Women's Equality

Participation: Access and the right to communicate
A discussion of participation is about rights and barriers. The right to communicate is a human right, and it is central to social struggle. This discussion is about our rights and what happens to them when we want to be online but can’t get access. Getting online and staying there is fast becoming a right and has become a critical access issue. If we are to have the opportunities of participating and communicating we need to be online.

The Participation email list will run from Oct. 7 - 25, 2002
Discussion will focus (but will not be limited to) questions such as:

  • How easy is it for you to get online?
  • Have you encountered barriers to getting online?
  • Do you find the internet is welcoming to women?
  • Do you find the internet is offensive to women?
  • Are you stereotyped when you’re online?
  • Do women and men have the same opportunities to get online?
  • How easy is it to contribute online?
  • Is it easy to find feminist voices online?

The Participation email list will be moderated by Barbara Anello. Please contact Barbara if you want more information. More information will be posted in the coming weeks re: the consultation and specifically the Participation email list.

November 5, 2001 | Pressure Your MP Day
Call your MP on Monday, November 5th, MP Pressure Day
A new round of trade expansion will speed up global insecurities, not eliminate them. We need to demand of our politicians that the WTO trade talks be halted.
Instead, governments and citizens around the world need to evaluate the WTO and its impact so far. And we need to re-think and re-define the role and responsibilities of government itself in this age of corporate-driven globalization.
We need a new fair trade agenda
