Save
Public Medicare!
North Bay & District Health Coalition Press Release
For Immediate Release -- Attn: Assignment Editor
March 5, 2002
North
Bay & District Joins Nation-wide Campaign to Save Medicare
North Bay
- The North Bay & District Health Coalition kicked off an important
campaign to save Medicare. Spokespeople announced that the North
Bay & District Health Coalition will conduct a door-to-door
canvass to talk to neighbours and community members about public
Medicare.
"This is
the number one public issue in our community and in communities
across the country", stated Dawson Pratt, co-chair/spokesperson
for the North Bay & District Health Coalition. "We will
be making an appeal to our friends and neighbours to protect and
extend quality public Medicare so it will be there for the next
generation."
The campaign
will take place as Roy Romanow, chair of the Commission on the Future
of Public Health Care in Canada is travelling across the country
to conduct public hearings. Organizers hope to send a clear message
to Mr. Romanow and provincial and federal politicians that the principles
of the Canada Health Act should guide and form a revitalized public
Medicare system in Canada.
"We want
to tell Mr. Romanow, Bob Wood and Mike Harris, that public health
care belongs to Canadians, not to politicians. Our health system
is for the people in our communities, not fodder for turf wars or
ideology.", added Barbara Anello, co-chair of the North Bay
Network for Social Action. "Medicare should be about patients,
not profit."
Organizers announced
that North Bay will be joining cities across Ontario in a door-to-door
campaign that will start on April 24. It will conclude with a National
Medicare Day on May 15.

Join
the Campaign to Save Medicare
The
campaign against Medicare is moving
into full swing...
In the face of new threats to Medicare from the Mazankowski Report,
the Kirby Commission and statements by Ernie Eves and other Tory
leadership hopefuls, local meetings are being organized around the
province to plan an urgent and unprecedented Campaign to Save Medicare.
Get
Involved in the Campaign and meetings in your area!
- You've
seen the Alberta government calling for the privatization of health
care.
- You've
seen Senator Michael Kirby calling for private health care.
- You've
seen the provincial conservative leadership contenders calling
for the end of Medicare, user fees, rationing, OHIP premiums.
- You've
lived through years of cuts, layoffs, rationing, restructuring,
privatization, destruction.
Let's
use our strength!
No matter who
does the poll the answer is still the same. The overwhelming majority
of Ontarians and Canadians support quality one-tier Medicare. And
we still support it...despite millions of dollars and relentless
campaigns to make us think otherwise.
The
times are critical -- let's make sure that those who want to protect
and promote public Medicare are heard.
The facts are
on our side. Evidence from all over the world is that private, for-profit
health care is bad for people and costs more for everyone.
