Tetra Ontario is looking to hire 11 people with disabilities.

Formed in 1987 by a group of people with disabilities in cooperation with professional engineers, Tetra Society of North America has grown to an organization that provides services in over 32 communities across Canada and five in the United States. Tetra matches skilled technicians, designers and engineers with disabled people seeking to gain as much independence as possible in such areas as self-care, school, work, and leisure. These professionals (over 400), volunteer their time to work one-on-one with the disabled client.

My name is Glenn Barnes. I am the Ontario Coordinator of the Tetra Society of North America. Starting July 9th, 2003 Tetra Ontario, in conjunction with Human Resources Development Canada, is starting a Youth Apprenticeship program at our 8 Chapters. As a result, we are looking to hire a limited number of Chapter coordinators in Ottawa, Kingston & Sarnia and also for the HRDC program 8 assistant coordinators (for London, Sarnia, Windsor, Sudbury, Hamilton, Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Kingston & Ottawa).

The employment program is for 1yr (July, 2003 - July, 2004) and is for disabled youth, who are under the age of 30, and currently employable in Canada. Youth Intern - Assistant Coordinator
Job Summary

The position will be filled by a candidate whose principal purpose is to assist the coordinator in running their local Chapter by developing and managing a core of volunteers and a group of client/members requesting Tetra 's services. The position would be structured through Vancouver (head office) and "mentored" by Tetra's Ontario Coordinator. Monthly reports and expenses would be sent to the Ontario Co-ordinator and forwarded on to the head office in Vancouver.


Requirements

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, a willingness to work in a number of extra, diverse areas. They must have a strong knowledge of disability related issues, as they will be working with people with disabilities. Strong communication skills are a definite requirement. As well the individual
must:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the time of the selection
  • Have a disability of some nature . Out of school . Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
  • Unemployed or underemployed and
  • Not in receipt of employment insurance (EI) benefit

This position has a depth of skills required as well as a certain level of business acumen, office organization, communication and public relations skills, and an understanding of workplace culture. Duties that would be required in this job are:

  • Identifying, generating and managing a core of client/members.
  • Identifying, establishing and managing a core of volunteers.
  • Organizing and conducting monthly meetings for the volunteer core.
  • Raise awareness by making presentations to community groups.
  • Host community events to raise overall public awareness of Tetra.
  • Website management, contribute ongoing information regarding chapter activities.
  • Fundraising for the chapter at the local level.
  • Public relations, generating publicity through media.

This will involve individualized skills, focusing on:

  • communication skills translated through phone skills, letters, and visitation
  • a strong working knowledge of the Tetra Society of North America

The position is a one-year contract, with the individual averaging 16 hours per week with flexibility being a major component of the job with a convenient schedule to be worked out. The job may involve working a few weekends and an occasional evening. The position is to be paid monthly at a rate of $8 per hour.
