NORTH BAY & DISTRICT HEALTH COALITION
Media Release
NATIONAL
PUBLIC MEDICARE DAY- MAY 15, 2002
North Bay,
May 13/2002: On May 15th, we are joining communities across
the province and across the country to stand together for the pride
of our nation, National Public Medicare - universal, accessible,
portable, publicly administered - the hard evidence of Canadian's
commitment to each other. Bill Kotsopoulos, local Coordinator
for the campaign declared that, " we want to tell all levels
of government that they must preserve our public health system by
saying yes to National Public Medicare!"
The organizing
committee members are inviting people in the community to symbolically
form a human chain with red Medicare ribbon at North Bay City Hall
at 5:00 p.m. Wed. May 15th. "Directly after this event we are
encouraging local citizens to paint the town red with the Medicare
ribbon," said Rev. Terry O'Connor another campaign
spokes person. O'Connor went on to say, " Canadians have come
to expect high quality medical services that are available to all
citizens regardless of their economic status and we certainly don't
want the Americanization of our healthcare system."
"Recent
events surrounding the Ontario governments backtracking on Hydro
privatization clearly demonstrates the importance of a grass roots
campaign that is fighting to protect our most sacred Medicare services,"
according to Barbara Anello, Co-Chair of the North Bay Network
for Social Action and a local Healthcare steering committee member.
People from
all walks of life are extremely concerned about the systematic erosion
of Medicare, as governments appear prepared to establish a two-tiered
system that lets those with money jump to the head of the line.
Local organizers believe that citizens in our community are not
prepared to accept such an obviously unfair and undemocratic process.
Come out and join your fellow concerned citizens on May 15th tell
all politicians that you say: YES TO NATIONAL PUBLIC MEDICARE!
