Biography of Dr. Wendy Young, 
NDP Candidate, Nipissing By-Election 2002

 

Wendy Young, Nipissing NDP Candidate Wendy Young, 48, is an Assistant Professor of Social Welfare at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario. She is married to Dr. Steven Steinberg and they have three children. They moved to North Bay from Moosonee in 1980.

Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Wendy grew up in Toronto, Ear Falls, and Brampton until attending university at Wilfrid Laurier University (originally Waterloo Lutheran University) in Waterloo. She earned her B.A. in Psychology (1973), her M.S.W. (1976), then later, her Ph.D in Social Work (1996) there.

Early in her career she worked for the Metropolitan Toronto Children's Aid Society, Homewood Sanitarium, Scarborough General Hospital and the North Cochrane District Child and Family Services.

Her membership in the NDP is an extension of her professional and personal commitment to social, political and economic justice.

She believes that governments must create policies that strengthen public services and support public sector workers, end poverty, respect Aboriginal rights, ensure equality and safety for women and children, increase access to affordable post-secondary education, expand public health care, secure labour rights and protect the environment.

Her interest in decolonization led to her doctoral dissertation entitled "Aboriginal Students and Post-Secondary Education: A Participatory Exploration of Experiences and Needs at a University and Community College in NorthEastern Ontario". Wendy has also been a faculty resource person on the Aboriginal Council on Education at Nipissing University since it was first formed.

Other community involvements in North Bay have included:

  • chairing the Community Council for the Disabled (S.H.A.R.E.)
  • organizing a Red Cross Auction for Ethiopia
  • membership on the Lay Training Committee at St. Andrew's United Church
  • membership on the local committee of Canadian Crossroads International
  • membership on the first Pow Wow Committee at the College Education Centre
  • membership on the School Advisory Council at King George Public School
  • involvement with some of the Social Planning Council's initiatives against homelessness and poverty.

In the fall of 2001 she gave a talk at the Northern Ontario Women's Shelters Conference in Mattawa on the negative impact of the provincial Conservative government's policies on women and services for women.

Currently, she is a Steering Committee member of the North Bay & District Health Coalition involved with the campaign to save medicare.

At Nipissing University, Wendy's committee service has ranged from:

  • chairing the Cultural Affairs
  • chairing the Library Committees
  • co-chairing the Equity and Accessibility Discussion Group during the Strategic Planning Process
  • membership on the President's Committee on Race Relations Policy
  • membership on the Employee Assistance Program Committee
  • membership on the Academic Planning, Arts Curriculum and Student Affairs Committees
  • membership on the Academic Planning, Arts Curriculum and Student Affairs Committees and the University Research Council, among others.

Wendy also served as President of the Nipissing University College Faculty Association for one year and has been on the Faculty Association's Salary and Working Conditions Committee.

As a member of the Executive of the Nipissing NDP Riding Association, Wendy has been a Member at Large, Vice-President (Provincial) and Provincial Council delegate.

She is currently President of the NDP Riding Association as well as Provincial Council delegate. In 1999 Wendy ran as the Nipissing NDP candidate in the provincial election. In 2000 Wendy was the Nipissing NDP candidate in the federal election.
