On October 24, local health coalitions,activists and supporters are holding events to demand real public consultations on health care across the province. BROKEN promises Despite long-promised public consultations on health care in Ontario, the provincial government has substituted an expensive and manipulative PR campaign for real democracy. In the late summer, at a cost of $1.35 million, the government delivered glossy surveys to every household in the province. A far cry from the real public consultations announced last spring, the survey avoids asking anything about health care privatization and other key attacks on Medicare. sick of DUMB questions Inflamed members of the public have flooded our office with phonecalls. They are suspicious about this “survey”. They want a chance to tell the government that they don’t want our public Medicare system squandered. STOP privatization Responses have varied. Some have written “NO PRIVATIZATION” across every page before sending the survey in to the ministry. Others are writing their real comments in the margins. Others refuse to participate. By far, the most objection was expressed over questions asking us to choose between such options as “Investing in new, state-of-the-art life-saving technologies” or “Having additional nurses and other staff to improve patient care”.
