Harris resigns: Ontario Tories Unfit To Govern
no matter who the leader!

Thursday, October 18, 2001

"The Ontario Coalition for Social Justice, along with our many community partners and provincial members, will continue our work to prove the Ontario Tories to be unfit to govern," said Kira Heineck, Coordinator of the OCSJ.

Heineck continued, "Mike Harris' resignation is a clear indication that the Tories are in trouble, and that Harris knows they are in trouble, and he has decided not to go down with the ship."

Harris' resignation comes after numerous public opinion polls have demonstrated that the party's popularity has dramati-cally declined, particularly in key voting constituencies. "Ontarians have sent a clear message to the government, that the Harris agenda is a threat to the public interest," Heineck said. "Simply putting a new face on the government doesn't change the fact that they are in trouble because they have done a bad job of governing this province. As such, the OCSJ will continue to challenge the Tories on their record and call for a new government that protects the public good instead of selling it to the highest bidder."

The OCSJ is a broad-based coalition over 200 member groups across the province, representing diverse sectors and many geographical regions. The OCSJ is committed to expanding the quality, accessibility and universality of health care, education and social welfare programs; promoting anti-racism; advocating economic policies that protect the rights of workers and lead to fair employment with compensation at a livable wage; and protecting the programs and services that ensure our quality of life in Ontario.

The UNFIT TO GOVERN project engages communities across Ontario in the collection and public presentation of locally based evidence that this government is unfit. The project, currently in the research phase, will present evidence that this government is unfit in a week of action centered around May Day, 2002. The evidence includes many examples of the decline in the quality of life of average Ontarians during the last 6 years of Tory rule in contrast to their promise that Ontarians would find prosperity and a better Ontario through the Common Sense Revolution.
