Child Poverty & Housing Crisis
The North Bay Network for Social Action will hold a Press Conference Friday, November 21 at 11:00 A.M at the Catholic Centre, 387 Algonquin Avenue.
The Network will release the Mayor's Proclamation of November 23rd to 29th as Child Poverty Awareness Week in North Bay.
The North Bay Network for Social Action is affiliated with Campaign 2000, a national coalition of groups and organizations committed to the elimination of Child Poverty in Canada.
Terry O'Connor, Network Co-chair, said that "In 1989 the House of Commons unanimously adopted a resolution committing to Eliminating Child Poverty in Canada by the Year 2000. That promise has so far gone unfulfilled".
They will also release the Mayor's Proclamation of November 22nd as National Housing Strategy Day in North Bay. The City of North Bay as part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities has called homelessness a National Disaster and called on the Federal Government to implement a National Housing Strategy.
Rev. Mr. O'Connor said, "It is imperative that all levels of government work together to provide adequate and affordable housing and make a real difference in the lives of children and families, the most vulnerable in our society".
