Hello! As a result of an impromptu meeting some groups from Canada held after the presentation here in New York by the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) regarding the Sisters in Spirit campaign, I have enclosed the following letter for you to immediately circulate to your networks. It is a letter to Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness asking her to facilitate the immediate establishment of the $10 million Sisters in Spirit fund which NWAC has been working towards for over a year now. McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister Dear Anne McLellan: On the occasion of International Women's Day, we are writing to urge you to immediately facilitate the establishment a $10 million fund for research and education related to violence against Aboriginal women. As Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, we are certain that you can appreciate the importance of affirming the value of the lives of the some 500 Aboriginal women who have been disappeared/murdered over the past three decades. For almost a year now, the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) has led the campaign to establish the Sisters in Spirit Fund. While there has been some indication of support from the federal government and Parliamentarians, nonetheless, funds have not been forthcoming despite promises to the contrary. The systemic killing of indigenous women in Canada, particularly those who are young and impoverished, has been well-documented by a recent Amnesty International report. With this knowledge, it is now the responsibility of the federal government to honour their commitment to Aboriginal women's organizations who are working to end the violence through the Sisters in Spirit campaign. As allied women's/human rights organizations, we are respectfully asking that you, in your capacity as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, assume the federal government's responsibilities towards the Native Women's Association of Canada with respect to the requested $10 million so that they can:

McLellan, vice-première ministre Madame Anne McLellan, À l'occasion de la Journée internationale de la femme, nous vous écrivons pour vous prier instamment de faciliter immédiatement la création d'un fonds spécial de 10 millions de dollars destiné à la recherche et à l'éducation concernant la violence faite aux femmes autochtones. À titre de ministre de la Sécurité publique et de la Protection civile, nous croyons que vous pouvez comprendre l'importance d'affirmer la valeur des vies des quelque 500 femmes autochtones qui sont disparues et/ou ont été assassinées depuis trois décennies. Depuis près d'un an, l'Association des femmes autochtones du Canada (NWAC) anime une campagne de mise sur pied du Fonds Sœurs d'esprit. Les quelques manifestations de soutien du gouvernement fédéral et des parlementaires n'ont hélas pas donné lieu aux subventions promises. Un rapport récent d'Amnistie Internationale documente pourtant de façon convaincante les assassinats systématiques des femmes autochtones du Canada, particulièrement les femmes jeunes et appauvries. Connaissant ces faits, le gouvernement fédéral doit aujourd'hui prendre ses responsabilités en respectant son engagement à l'égard des organisations de femmes autochtones qui travaillent à mettre un terme à cette violence avec la campagne Soeurs d'esprit. Comme organisations de femmes et de défense des droits humains alliées à cette campagne, nous vous demandons respectueusement d'assumer, à titre de vice-première ministre et de ministre de la Sécurité publique et de la Protection civile, la responsabilité gouvernementale de verser à l'Association des femmes autochtones du Canada les 10 millions de dollars requis pour les démarches suivantes:
