Ontario Settles Pay Equity Dispute
... Affecting 100,000 Ontario Women

In June 2003 a settlement was reached in a long-standing pay equity dispute affecting more than 100,000 Ontario women. The settlement covers female dominated workplaces in the public sector and many community-based organizations that receive transfer payments from the province.

The transfer payment workplaces affected include: long-term care facilities, community care access centres, community health centres, childcare centres, nursing homes, homecare providers, shelters and other community-based agencies.

Under the agreement, the government will provide affected transfer payment organizations with three types of funding to cover pay equity adjustments; outstanding amounts owed to employees; current increases; and future increases to 2006.

To ensure accountability for the settlement funds and compliance with the Pay Equity Act, Boards of transfer payment organizations will be required to provide written confirmation that the payments have been made to their employees.

Transfer payment organizations will also need to track pay equity liabilities in their budgets and show actual expenditures on year-end reconciliations.

The settlement also stipulates that information and education be provided to Boards of transfer payment organizations about their obligations, and to ministry staff on the terms of the settlement.
