Education
- Making Every School
an Excellent School
publicpower
means every public school gets the boost it needs to be
an excellent school, properly staffed and equipped, offering
a full range of programs to optimize each student's performance.
It means parents don't have to sell candy bars to acquire essential
classroom supplies.
publicpower
means having a principal, librarian and physical education
teacher in every school, having textbooks for every student,
special education and English/French second language services
for all who need them, and clean, safe schools.
Regardless
of where in the province a public school is located, it should
be an excellent school. Our goal is to close the education gap
and improve education quality.
Conservatives:
Conservatives
ripped $2.1 billion out of public education, according to the study
done by their appointed adviser, Mordechai Rozanski. The Conservatives
deliberately created a crisis in our schools.
Plans to use
public funds for private schools will create lower enrolments and
less money
available for public schools.
By continually
under funding public education, the Conservatives hope that even
more parents
will put their children in private school so the government can
cut its investments in public
education even further.
Liberals:
Many Liberals favour, as do Conservatives, public funds going
to private schools and they would welcome the introduction of vouchers.
It's the typical Liberal flip-flop all over again - they say 'yes'
one minute and 'no' the next to funding for private schools.
Like the Conservatives,
Liberals promote "school choice" - a concept that runs
counter to
making every school an excellent school.
Their plan creates
have and have-not schools from neighbourhood to neighbourhood and
uneven standards depending on geographical and income demographics.
The Liberals
won't enshrine the principles of public education in an education
charter or
appoint a tough, new commissioner as an education watchdog. No charter
to guarantee
quality public education, no watchdog, no bite, no effective public
oversight.
NDP:
Only Howard Hampton and the NDP will immediately restore the full
amount identified by Dr. Rozanski's Education Equality Task Force
- $2.1 billion, including inflation and enrollment - into our public
schools and classrooms. The NDP's Education Excellence Fund and
proceeds from ending the private school tax credit will guarantee
this investment each and every year.
We'll take the
politics out of education funding and put the funds back in.
Our public schools,
backed by an Education Charter, a new education commissioner and
adequate, guaranteed and dedicated funding, will once again become
hubs of educational and
community life. The community's use of schools will become affordable
again.
