The
Conservative property tax cut benefits wealthy seniors far more
than it does a typical senior.
Here
are the facts:
COST:
$450 Million
The Program:
Gives rebates tilted heavily towards wealthy homeowners,
replacing in part an NDP program of fair property and sales tax
credits that benefited seniors with incomes of $47,000 a year
or less.
Who It's
For:
Primarily wealthy seniors living in the most expensive
homes. There's no cap on income, so the wealthiest pocket the
lion's share. If you own a million dollar house, you'll get $4,300
from this plan.
Who Loses:
780,000 modest-income seniors won't benefit much.
As well, all Ontario property taxpayers will lose the 10 per cent
education property tax reduction the Conservatives promised them.
"This
is overwhelmingly aimed at people who own very expensive mansions"
~ Nipissing NDP Candidate Terry O'Connor
"We
weren't born yesterday."
