Child Care Announcement Signals Policy Shift

Ontario recently announced funding to support the creation of 4,000 new subsidized child care spaces. The $58 million investment comes from federal transfers, and will be flowed to municipalities for local child care initiatives aimed at children under five years of age.

The announcement marks a clear departure from the approach of the previous government, which focused on the creation of Early Years Centres and other forms of support rather than expanding the regulated child care system.

Almost one-third of the funding will be devoted to one-time capital projects like new playgrounds and facilities. Some funds will be targeted for the child care centres in or adjacent to schools. The announcement should also enable a number of municipalities, who had been warning that they would be forced to cut existing child care spaces because of budget shortfalls, to stave off planned reductions.
