The “Michael Moore of India” to screen
“War and Peace” in Toronto

One of India’s most acclaimed documentary filmmakers, Anand Patwardhan, will be in Toronto at the screening of his film “War and Peace” on Monday, April 10th at 7 pm. The event is being held at the Royal Cinema, 608 College Street, and is being organized by the Voice of Women, Canada’s oldest grassroots anti-nuclear organization. “It’s so important to hear a non-Western perspective in a discussion of emerging nuclear issues,” said organizer Martha Goodings, “and when we found out the film was funny as well, we knew we had to show it”.

Filmed over three tumultuous years in India, Pakistan, Japan and the USA, “War and Peace”, is an epic documentary which takes us on a tour of nuclear testing sites in India, schools in Pakistan, and pro-nuclear rallies in both countries. The film has won many awards including Gold Award at the Indian Documentary Producer’s Association 2002, Best Documentary at the International Video Festival Kerala 2003, Best Documentary at the Karachi International Film Festival 2003 and Best Non-Fiction at the National Film Awards, India 2004

"The film itself is a tour de force, beautifully shot and often darkly funny and much more riveting than the dry subject matter might suggest." ~ Duncan Campbell - The Guardian, UK

Filmmaker Anand Patwardhan, often dubbed the “Michael Moore of India”, is an award-winning filmmaker who has been making political documentaries for nearly three decades. He has been active in an astonishing array of movements, including those for housing rights of the urban poor, communal harmony and the environment. He has also been involved in lobby groups against the Narmada Dam, unjust and unsustainable development, and nuclear testing in South Asia. As a filmmaker, he has won over 20 international awards from festivals in India, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, France, the UK and the United States.
