At one of Toronto's largest fundraising events of the year, the Honourable Al Gore, former Vice-President of the United States of America, and Tipper Gore will address more than 1,500 of Canada's business and opinion leaders in a talk entitled A Nation Divided: Global Implications. An
Evening with Al and Tipper Gore,
organized by the Sunnybrook & Women's Foundation in support
of The Centre for Research in Women's Health, will be held on
Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The
event hopes to raise $1 million for women's health research. "Together Al
and Tipper Gore have been one of the strongest voices for American families,"
says Dr. Heather Maclean, founding director of The Centre for Research
in Women's Health. "We are absolutely thrilled and honoured that
they have agreed to attend this year's event." The Centre for Research
in Women's Health is a partnership of Sunnybrook and Women's College
Health Sciences Centre and the University of Toronto, committed to fostering
research collaboration and telling the women's health story to the world.
Researchers at the centre look to identify the limitations of health
services and develop practices to better meet women's needs by building
partnerships between medical and social organizations to make research
relevant with global influence and impact. With more than 250
partners including universities, hospitals and health centres, funding
agencies, governments, corporations and community-based, national and
international organizations from across Canada and around the world,
the centre is living up to its promise. "In today's
busy world, balancing careers and families is not easy, especially for
women," says Mr. John Sherrington, Vice Chair, ScotiaCapital, the
evening's event presenting sponsor. "If ever there was a time to
recognize the importance of women's health issues, it is now. Research
is at the root of solving health issues. Early detection, treatment
and cures, not only make a difference in the lives of women, but also
to those around them. For these reasons, Scotiabank Group is proud to
be this year's Presenting Sponsor of An Evening with Al and Tipper Gore." This is the fifth in a series of fundraising dinners held to benefit The Centre for Research in Women's Health, building on the success of the 2002 event, An Evening with Rudolph Giuliani. The enthusiastic support of the Canadian business community for women's health research has made each event increasingly successful. About
